Pashchaat Karma(Follow up Procedure):-

Following the vamana karma the client should be treated with below procedure:

  • Dhumpana (Therapeutic smoking)
  • Samsarjana karma
  • Santarpana chikitsa
  • Restriction

Following the induction of vomiting the client’s general condition as well as state gastrointestinal tract is not similar to the one present before the vamana procedure. Due to the strain of the eliminating procedure the client become physically weak and the gastrointestinal tract is also sluggish. Therefore certain follow up measure are planned to regain the original physical strength as well as active gastrointestinal tract. In the description that follow the details of these follow up procedures is given.

Dhumpana (Therapeutic smoking):- During the procedure of Vamana karma there is every possibility of provocation of kapha dosha in the throat causing symptoms like coating and irritation in the throat. This can be treated by the administration of Dhumpana. Snaihika, vairechanika or samana type of Dhumpana should be carried out depending upon the requirement.

Samsarjana krama:-By the induction of vomiting the digestive power is likely to be weakend. Therefore regular diet is not advisable for several days following Pradhan Karma. Immediately after the Pradhan Karma as the digestive power is very weak only liquid food is advisable. As the digestion power show a gradual increase the food is also slowly changed to solids or to regular foods. This helps in the complete recovery of digestive ability. Considering this aspect of the digestion, the common formulation of diet prescription for lunch and supper is detailed below:


  • Supper on day of vamana: only liquid portion of gruel (peya)
  • Lunch on 1st day after vamana: only liquid portion of gruel (peya)
  • Supper on 1st day after vamana: only liquid portion of gruel (peya)
  • Lunch on 2nd day after vamana: gruel with little solid portion (vilepi) added with small amount of salt and ghee.
  • Supper on 2nd day after vamana: gruel with little solid portion (vilepi) added with small amount of salt and ghee.
  • Lunch on 3rd day after vamana: gruel with little solid portion (vilepi) added with small amount of salt and ghee.
  • Supper on 3rd after vamana: rice (prepared from 160 grams of rice) with green gram soup (yush), salt and ghee.
  • Lunch on 4th day after vamana: rice (prepared from 160 grams of rice) with green gram soup (yush), salt and ghee.
  • Supper on 4th day after vamana: rice (prepared from 160 grams of rice) with green gram soup (yush), salt and ghee.
  • Lunch on Final 7th day after vamana: meat soup (rasa) with salt
  • Supper on Final 7th day after vamana: meat soup (rasa) with salt
  • Lunch on 8th day after vamana: meat soup (rasa) with salt
  • Supper on 8th day after vaman: usual diet from here onwards.

*Instead of meat soup vegetable soup may be given for vegetarians.

In the above diet course of 7 days counting form the day of Pradhan Karma, four forms of food is prescribed as liquid gruel, rice and soup. And the every form of food is repeated for 3 meals time. This is the diet course of clients who have undergone best degree of shodhana. In clients who have shown moderate degree of shodhana each form of food is given for 2 meal time. And therefore the diet course completes in 5 days including the day of Pradhan Karma. Similarly each form of food is given for only one meal time in clients who have shown minimal degree of shodhana. And the diet course in such clients completes in 3 days.
